Purpose of Offline Boiler Cleaning Chemical :
The main reason for using chemical cleaning process in boilers/ heat exchangers is to eradicate certain damage like tube failures, rust deposition, etc and also to improve its unit availability. The tube failure caused in low pressure boilers or heat exchangers is due to the creep which occurs when the internal deposition provides them an abnormal metal temperature. In high pressure boilers, this type of deposition causes a relatively smaller quantity of deposit and reduces difficulties. These deposits are also responsible for caustic corrosion and hydrogen damage, to cause tube failures by attaining a critical temperature. The deposition that originates from fabrication and while operating should be considered a potential problem.
Every part of steam generator that provides pressure is allowed to heat during the working processes like fabrication, erection during forming operations, stress relief, welding and bending. When carbon low alloy steels are provided high temperature in the presence of air, oxidation process is initiated and the oxide that is produced is called mill scale. The mill scale on these heat exchanger tubing is very thin except at some areas like near welds and bends. Where mill scale is uniform at the start, its brittleness while cooling down can produce flaking. While under working condition, the mill scale gets swiftly eroded from the steam generating surfaces and gets redeposited in critical areas. Cleaning done by using Preoperational acid, completely removes the mill scale and atmospheric rust that degrade these steam generator to a high extent during erection.
After a boiler or a heat exchanger is allowed to function, a large number of solid particles can enter the units along with the feed water. Some part of the insoluble particles get easily deposited on its surface. If these deposits are not cleaned over a long period of time, it can reduce their quality. However, in a high pressure system, the freedom from deposition is not possible. It requires service and cleaning in the frequency of every 3 to 4 months. This frequency can be further adjusted if the individual unit operating history demands.
